Moly grease and its functions

We are here again for our readers. We have learnt a lot about lubrications, oils, grease and silicone. We have also come across an exploration about the use of such substances. Every lubricant is used for different purpose. Today our leaders will get to know about one such substance. It is called Molybdenum disulfide commonly known as Moly Grease.

Molybdenum disulfide is available in solid form and it is used in an extreme pressure. It is used when there is a need of constant volume of film to have a lubrication on the surface area of bearings. It is in silver colour, available in mineral form. It has low friction property. It is generally used to minimize friction between two surfaces. Gears and splines work smoothly with the application of Moly Grease. It does not get affected with oxygen or dilute acid. It is a solid lubricant and robust in features.

Properties of Moly Grease and its uses.

Moly grease is specifically used for heavy load machineries. This solid grease is used to work with CV joints and universal joints. This grease has characteristics of sliding across the metal surfaces. Moly grease works well when two metal surfaces get rub with each other. This kind of grease can’t be used for any ordinary purpose. This is manufactured in order to give smoothness to metal parts like splines, bearings, and axels. These kinds of functions need grease which can act as a penetrating substance. It allows the part to move smoothly even in case of two metals sliding on the same panel. It gives bonded coating to the bearings, and other parts.

It is extracted from ores and it is used as a lubricant for specific purposes where machineries have to work in high pressure. It has a geothermal origin, which makes it capable of working in heat and pressure. Molybdenum gets its characteristic due its combination with sulphur.

The other purpose of this grease is to use it as additive in oil lubricant. It has a film formation property which acts like a lubricant on the surface, giving it smoothness and minimizing friction. It has a yield strength of at least 3450 MPa. It shows a stable performance even with the most kind of solvents. In many cases, graphite is also used as an additive with lubricant, but where graphite fails, Moly grease comes to give the best results. It shows low friction when it is applied to metals.

When Moly Grease gets mixed with water soluble sulphide, it gives lubrication and corrosion inhibition in cutting fluids and metal forming material.

Use of Moly Content

Moly content can be used in various industries for different purpose.

  • 1% to 20 % of content is used in greases in manufacturing, mining and transportation. It is applicable to ball and roller bearings, chassis and conveyors.
  • 20 % to 60% of content is used in paste forms for mineral and synthetic base. It is used while assembling various parts of machine-like bearings, rollers, spines and gears.
  • 5 % to 5 % of content is used in motor oils or synthetic fluids. It is applied to automotive reducer, cams and gears.
  • 1 % to 20 % of content is used in water suspension for metalworking and process lubrication of thread, slices, and packaging.
  • Up to 85% of content is used in Bonded coating in threads, tools, switches, locks, valves, and slides.
  • It can also be used as composites in aircrafts, automotive and rail brake pads and linings.
  • 10% to 100% of moly content is used in pure or mix powder for punch lines, stamping, packing.

The formation of Moly Grease

The formation of Moly Grease is atomic in terms of the structure. A layer of Molybdenum is there in between the two layers of sulphur atoms. When Moly substance is applied on the surface, it gets dispersed on it, making a way for both the surfaces so that they can slide on the lines. Moly Grease gets bind on the surfaces so that it avoids the friction of two surfaces. It makes them to move relatively with one another. Different molecules of grease combine together to make a hexagonal form of moly grease. Sticky moly grease gets fix into the microscopic pores on the surface of the metal parts.

The content in this article, gave us knowledge about the formation of Moly Grease. It also explained the properties and use of Moly Grease on the two metal surfaces. It is heat resistant and can give the best performance under high pressure. It is available in the form of ore. It has a quality of binding on the metal surface. It can produce film, making it smooth on the metal surface. We hope that this article would be helpful to our readers in order to get the knowledge about Moly Grease.
